Winter Tour
Winter tours are available when the snow flies (usually the first week of November) until the first week of April and are designed for those who want to experience the thrill of dog-powered transportation and adventure with the comfort and safety of an experienced musher on board. Both the 30 Minute Short Ride and 1 hour tours offer plenty of photo opportunities.
One-Hour Tour

Time on the sled and on the trail will be between 50 mins to 1 hour and cover double the miles than the short ride tour. This longer tour offers guests more time on the sled with the musher and sled dogs on the trail for more photos, more time for stories and interaction with your musher. Dog lovers and photographers might choose this tour for a ‘bigger experience’ than our 30 minute short ride. Also, in this longer tour, you will also be invited to take turns riding the runners with your musher for a short distance if the musher deems it safe to do so.

Hands On

Meet and greet the canine athletes in the team and in the Paws kennel. Your guide will stop and take photos of you on the trail with your camera. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting ‘doggy’ if you plan to interact with the sled dogs.

Educational/Informative

Learn all about raising Alaskan Huskies, a bit of the history of dog mushing, and/or what it takes to race a team of these fine athletes. Each of our guides is a professional musher who has dedicated many of their years to this sport whether as a lifestyle or in racing. Ask them about their relationship to their dogs, their races, their adventures on the trail. Each friendly face offers a wealth of knowledge and personal experience.

Number of passengers per sled & weight distribution:

2 people will ride in the sled together – one in front of the other. We do not mix parties, so you will ride with someone from your own group. For the safety of dogs, mushers and guests, we will try to distribute weight so that no sled carries more than 450 lbs. If your group has several people, you should choose your riding partner so that a larger and smaller person rides together rather than 2 larger people in one sled. People over 250 lbs need to ride by themselves in the sled. You will need to know the weights of each passenger when booking your reservation. Single travelers will need to purchase 2 tickets.

Cancellation Policy:

A 100% deposit is required at the time of booking. A full refund will be issued for cancellations made more than two weeks prior to your booking. No refunds are offered for cancellations made within two weeks of your booking. Extenuating circumstances will be considered.

The tour date/time may be amended free of charge, provided there is space available.

If the temperature is below -35F at our mushing site, we will cancel tours. We will most likely cancel the tour the night before, though sometimes we will wait to see what the temperature is on the morning of your tour.

If the temperature is below -25F, we will offer you the option to switch to the shorter tour and refund the difference in price. You have the option to cancel with a full refund if the temperature is -25F or colder. If we can’t do the tour, any deposit will be refunded.

Please note that the temperature for the above conditions is read at our mushing site. If temperatures are too low to operate safely, we will inform you of any changes as quickly as possible.

Itinerary

1. Welcome to our Yurt

Get checked in for your tour in our warm, wood-heated yurt. Our kennel is located “off the grid,” with a generator for power and a large heated outhouse building for our toilet. We keep the yurt warm and toasty for before and after your tour. You will get dressed up in additional arctic gear (which is provided if needed) in the yurt.

2. Meet our Dogs

Meet the friendliest dogs in Alaska! Hold an Alaskan Husky pup (when available – most are born in summer months) and meet and greet all the other canine athletes in the kennel. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting ‘doggy’ if you plan to interact with the sled dogs.

3. Winter Sled Tour

Get to ride in the sled dog basket (or on the runners with the guide for a short distance, if it is safe to do so; Covid protocols have prevented this in 2020 and early 2021; we expect to resume the option as soon as possible) while a professional guide takes you on a 50+ min loop through our wilderness area.

4. Finish with a Photo Op and Hot Drinks!

Please print and fill out the below forms for your upcoming overnight trip. Either return them via email prior to your tour or bring them with you.
