Seems like yesterday that I quit my teaching job and made my wish to share my sled dogs and passion for mushing adventure come true. 15 years ago we started Paws for Adventure with 24 dogs, 5 dogsleds, a tent, and a 1/4 mile track at Chena Hot Springs Resort we began our Mushing School. I say “we” because any friend I could talk into helping me out with this endeavor got recruited as dog handler, snowmachine driver, dog truck mechanic, dog house builder or trail groomer. It was a great project! There are many people to thank for helping me create not only the tour company, but a wonderful life filled with adventure.
It is still a great project, and as with many dreams, may be realized, but will never be totally finished until I’m out of energy or new ideas. We have now 50 awesome dogs in our lot at 5.5 mile Chena Hot Springs Rd., 8 dogsleds, a handler’s cabin, a warm-up yurt, 5 expedition tents, a remote Roadhouse, 3 snowmachines, and a whole new list of projects to keep us busy. As long as I own sled dogs and this dynamic business, we’ll be busy with the next idea/ adventure. There are so many more trails to follow, great sled dogs to befriend, and more and more people venturing to Alaska with the same starry-eyed passion for mushing that has kept me doing what I do for the last 20 years.
