2016 Fall Tours

Fall Tours: September 1 until the snow flies (typically the first week of November)

Join the Paws crew for a dog cart ride led by your musher/guide on our 4-place ATV pulled by our Alaskan Huskies. Tour is informational, interactive and hands-on! Plenty of time for photos and meeting and greeting the sled dogs in their home kennel and talking to the mushers about sled dog life and training. Tour usually lasts 30 min. to 1 hour. Cart Ride length is variable due to weather (temperature) and seasonal training for sled dogs.

ATVs are the standard training vehicles for early season training (before we get sufficient snowfall to use the sled). Once we have enough snow and trails are safe, we’ll switch to sleds for our rides (see our short and 1 hour ride options). The exact date of our switch from ATV to sleds depends on the weather – last year it was the first week of November before we were able to use our sleds for dogsled rides.

Available for any skill level.

Winter Tours: These tours are available when the snow flies (approx. Oct 15) until the first week of April and are designed for those who want to experience the thrill of dog-powered transportation and adventure with the comfort and safety of an experienced musher on board. This action-packed adventure takes you uphill, downhill, thru the spruce forest and finds excitement around every corner. You’ll be amazed at the power and eagerness of this wonderful hard-working pack of Alaskan huskies – they love to pull!

“All of our day tours are based at our established Paws kennel site – located on an original 300 acre Fairbanks homestead and connected to an extensive trail system in the Chena River Valley (home to many mushing enthusiasts). Our site faces south looking at the Alaska Range.

You have the unique opportunity to visit (“hands-on”) with all of our 56 sleddogs in their home kennel and hear our sled dog tales of many years experience adventuring with our canine athletes. All of our mushers are not only long time guides, but also have personal stories of Alaskan expeditions and/or racing experiences to share.

Dog lovers plan on spending more than your 30min or 1 hour guided time getting extra dog love. We don’t kick you out after your tour.”

1 Hour Adventure

(ride in the basket or try riding the runners with the musher on board): $100.00 per person

Winter Tour – Learn to drive your own sled dog team! A feature tour of Paws – one of our favorites and where  we started 10 years ago – teaching our guests the fine art of dog driving…

Mushing School

A 3 to 3.5 hour adventure where guests will learn to drive their own 3-4 dog team in a safe and controlled manner. After initial instruction and practice with musher aboard, we will take a 8-10 mile Fun Run on groomed trails in the open field and connecting Spruce forest. The trail varies – some straight, wide and flat, some narrow with big turns and ‘whoop-di-dos’ where things are more technical and challenging.  We think the sled dogs enjoy this part the best! Hands down, one of the best experiences you’ll ever try. Watch out, it’s addicting… For your own safety and the safety of the sled dogs, you should be in reasonably good health with good physical stamina and upper body strength, and have a good sense of balance. Ample one-on-one instruction. Each participant will receive a Mushing School Certificate and PAWS patch.

Arctic outerwear provided. 6 Person max per session

3+ Hour Mushing School: $295.00

You will travel 20-25 miles (3-5 hours on the sled – exact trails length and time will depend on temperatures and weather and your interest). A very well run outfit with nice leaders and nice dogs.

We took the five day overnight mushing trip to the historic Tolovana lodge through the endless Alaskan wilderness along the old mail, trappers' and miners' trails. It was exciting, beautiful, and we had a wonderful time. The arctic tents we stayed in two nights were roomy, comfortable and warm with the stove inside. We stayed in the rustic Tolovana lodge for two nights, absorbing the history of what it took to settle this vast area. It was in a great setting along the Nenana River where we could see the aurora late at night.

Leslie and Dave were very good hosts and took a lot of care to make our trip enjoyable. The dogs were adorable, well taken care of and they also had nice accommodations. Leslie also has plenty of outerwear to borrow in case we needed anything extra to keep warm. A very well run outfit with nice leaders and nice dogs.

An experience of a lifetime! We're ready to go again!
Thank you Leslie and Dave and your crew.

Like a Beautiful Dream!!!

Like a Beautiful Dream!!! There are several places where you can schedule a dog sled ride in this area..... I strongly suggest you try this one first! We were directed here by Taste of Alaska Lodge owner/operator Kory. Sooooo very thankful!!! We were treated to a one hour ride through some of the most breathtaking scenery! Kevin, the musher who took us out, was the best. He had perfect control at all times.... stopped a few times to get pictures of my husband and me with the dogs and sled... and even let me ride along with him on the back of the sled. Kevin's dog, Adam... was one of the lead dogs. He was a riot!!! Each time the sled stopped he would dive head first into the snow bank to cool off... see picture!!

We’ve made new friends that made us feel like we were family.

From April and RJ Tazelaar, TN-

We have stood in the absolute stillness of a birch forest as the auroras danced over our heads. We have been carried through the evergreens and across frozen lakes by the power of a team of dogs. We have slept, wrapped in our sleeping bags and warmed by a wood stove in our tents. Our bellies have been filled with moose, reindeer and some of the finest blueberry French toast ever made. We've made new friends that made us feel like we were family. This has been the most amazing adventure. Thank you Leslie Goodwin-Williams, Heather Scannell and all the people of Fairbanks! We hope to see you again soon!
